Basic Things You Should Know Before Visiting The Koh Phi Phi, Thailand
At a distance of just about 50 minutes by boat from Phuket, Koh Phi Phi Don is one of the most spectacular islands of Thailand. Koh Phi Phi is made up of two islands joined by a narrow strip of land that gives life to two beautiful bays of white sand. With turquoise waters, limestone cliffs, white sand beaches and miles of forest without roads, Koh Phi Phi Don is certainly a perfect tropical paradise on Earth.
Here are some of the basic things you should know before visiting the island:
The strip of land that joins the two islands of Koh Phi Phi Don is home to the beautiful beaches of Ao Ton Sai and Ao Dalam. Ao Ton Sai is the pier where the boats dock and the island’s main village called Ton Sai is the place where all kinds of shops, ATMs, internet cafes and some guesthouses are located. From here starts a small road that leads to the beach of Haad Hin Khom, dotted with restaurants, bars, shops, small resorts and tourist agencies.
If you are looking for a quiet vacation, you may want to stay in a hotel or a resort in the northern part of Koh Phi Phi Don where there are a number of beautiful beaches and bays, some of which can only be reached by boat. For those willing to stay in a quiet place, the areas of Ton Sai Beach and Lo Dalam are not suitable as the nightlife here is very dominant and there is a series of hotels that play loud music until late at night.
Koh Phi Phi Leh
Towards the south of Phi Phi Don, we find the smallest island named Koh Phi Phi Leh. With a landscape that is still intact, Phi Phi Leh is formed by vertical limestone cliffs that plunge into the sea. The island is uninhabited and there are some really beautiful bays. With their fantastic fine white sand, Maya Bay and Loh Samah Bay are the most picturesque. The sea around Koh Phi Phi Leh is deep enough, especially in the south where it reaches a depth of over 30 meters. This makes Koh Phi Phi Leh an amazing destination for diving enthusiasts. However, the island also offers a number of coves where you can enjoy simple snorkeling.
After the tragic Tsunami devastation that Koh Phi Phi suffered in 2004, the Thai government decided to reassert its control on the island (given its status as a national marine park) trying to stop unauthorized construction that has reduced the thin isthmus of land connecting the two small islands into a dumping ground. However, the landowners did not take this plan of government positively and strongly opposed the implementation of such plans. Now this strip of land is considerably cleaner and all the unauthorized constructions have been reduced to a minimum.
Koh Phi Phi Don can be visited on organized tours that depart daily from the island of Phuket and the nearby seaside resort of Krabi. With its beautiful nature views, an exuberant nightlife, peaceful beaches, a number of hotels and luxury resorts offered for cheap, Koh Phi Phi is definitely a destination to consider if you are planning a holiday in Thailand.
